There are mainly the following common working principles:
Conductivity method: The salinity is calculated by measuring the conductivity of the solution. Because the conductivity of the salt solution has a certain relationship with the salt content, solutions of different salinities have different conductivity.
Optical method: The salinity is measured by using the refraction, scattering and other characteristics of light in solutions of different salinities. For example, the salinity is determined by measuring the refraction angle of light after passing through the solution.
